Wide base speed fin

Bericht door mark h » ma jan 14, 2019 3:43 pm

Good afternoon. Sorry to write in English.

I would like to hear some advice please.

I have been using an set of old wide base speed fins. Tectonic Nomad, 21, 23 and 25 on SB W44, W49 and W53. I have used the Nomads since 2010 because. I think it is time for me to change my fins to more modern fins.

I am considering Z Fins SPA, Gasoil ELS L and Zulu Hamba. I see a lot of people successfully using Z Fin SPA and Gasoil ELS/ELS L, but no one using Zulu Hamba's, so not sure how good Zulu Hamba's are.

I am not sure what fin sizes to buy. I think I remember MVM saying wide base speed fins are about 2cm to 3cm shorter than normal fins, is this correct? What sizes would replace the Nomad 21 (SB W44), Nomad 23 (SB W49) and Nomad 25 (W53)? I was thinking maybe 22cm, 24cm and 26cm.

I am not a top speed sailor, just average. Weight = 100kg/195cm

Thanks in advance.

Look at gps-speedsailing site what other riders around your weight use. But i think you are right

Depends off the layup and outline off the fin

I use a 17/18 cm wide base MXR asy for my W44

Thanks for replying. I took a couple of hours looking at other riders last night, seems 20/21 is good for the W44 and 22/23 for the W49, 24/25 for W53.

I also looked in my fin bag last night and forgot I also have a Nomad 19cm, I should try it next time.

Regards, Mark

That is very helpful, thanks. today I have bought an ELS L 21cm for the W44. If I like it, I will also buy the 23 and 26.

Best regards

I have good experience with the Z Delta Speed 25 cm with my JP Speed 54. For me it works with sail sizes 6.4 - 7.8 with sweeetpot with 7.0m2.
In my opinion Wide base speed fins only give an advantage in shallow water spots in relatively ligther winds, so you can make the run closer to a dam or sand bar. In other words, to use a wide base speed fin in shorter lengths than 23cm it could get sketchy as the water surface gets more choppy in high winds.
